I married my high school sweetheart at 73 — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “You walked right into his TRAP.”

Thomas was my first love when we were seventeen.

We truly loved each other, and it seemed like it would last forever.

But then I had to leave for college in another city, and he wanted to stay in our hometown because his father had a business there.

He begged me to stay with him, but I refused.

He told me I’d broken his heart.

We never saw each other again after I left.

I don’t even know exactly how much time passed after that.

About 55 years, I suppose.

I built my life in another city, but at some point, I realized I wanted to go back to the town where I’d grown up.

So that’s exactly what I did.

But my pension wasn’t enough to live on, so I took a job as a nurse at the local hospital.

Then one day, I stepped into a patient’s room to care for him.

I opened his chart and saw the name Thomas.

I looked into his eyes and recognized him.

He was thin and incredibly weak, but it was him.

Thomas had stage 4 cancer.

Thomas looked at me, smiled right away, and said hello.

It was as though fate had decided to bring us together one more time.

We talked every day, and you know that feeling when someone just feels like your soulmate?

That’s how it felt with Thomas.

Then one day, Thomas quietly said:

“Sweetheart, I don’t have much time left, so it’s time for me to confess something.

I’ve loved you my entire life.

I never married anyone because the only person I ever dreamed of marrying was YOU.

Will you marry me?

THIS IS MY LAST WISH.”

And…

I said yes.

We got married right there in his hospital room, and in that moment, we were both truly happy.

But a month later, he passed away.

I was heartbroken.
