The day after his funeral, someone knocked on my door.
It was Thomas’s lawyer.
He handed me a BOX and said:
“Thomas was right.
You finally walked right into his trap.
This box is for you.
He left you SOMETHING special.
Something you DESERVE.”
I opened it, and my breath caught in my throat when I saw WHAT Thomas had left me.

And underneath it — a set of keys.
My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the envelope.
The lawyer stood quietly in my doorway, watching me.
I unfolded the letter.
It was in Thomas’s handwriting.
*”My darling.
If you’re reading this, then you said yes.
You always were stubborn about leaving — so I had to find a way to make you stay.
The keys are for the house on Maple Street.
Our house.
I bought it the year after you left.
I always believed you’d come back to me someday.”*
I looked up at the lawyer.
I couldn’t speak.
He nodded slowly.
“He purchased that property 54 years ago.
He never sold it.
He kept it maintained every single year.
He told me once — if she ever comes home, I want her to have somewhere to go.”
My legs nearly gave out.
But then his expression shifted.
He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a second envelope.
“There’s something else,” he said quietly.
“Thomas asked me to give you this only after you’d read the letter.
He said you’d need to be sitting down.”
He held it out.
On the front, in Thomas’s handwriting, were four words:
*”There is a son.”*
I sat down on the edge of the sofa.
I don’t remember deciding to.
My legs simply stopped holding me.
The lawyer — Mr.
Hale, he’d told me his name when he arrived, though I’d barely registered it — sat across from me in the armchair without being asked.
He set his briefcase on the floor and folded his hands in his lap.
“Take your time,” he said.
