Inside were photographs of my property.
Repair estimates.
Notes about the roof.
Information about the downstairs bathroom.
And a professional valuation of my house.
For a moment, I could not breathe.
Then everything inside me went cold.
“So that’s why you’re here.”
Ryan looked confused.
“What?”
I held up the folder.
“You couldn’t wait?”
His face changed.
“Dad, no.”
“You were angry because I spent too much of your inheritance on school, so now you’ve moved on to calculating what the house is worth?”
David reached toward the papers.
“Let me explain.”
I pulled them away.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Years of silence crashed down on me all at once.
I had come home from one of the proudest moments of my life, and within minutes I was back to feeling like an old man whose family was simply waiting to see what he would leave behind.
“You thought I wasted my money,” I said. “Now what? You’re checking whether there’s enough left in the house?”
Ryan went pale.
“That’s not what this is.”
“Then tell me what it is.”
Part 4 — The Truth They Had Been Hiding
David took a long breath.
“We’re not selling your house.”
“Then why do you have a valuation?”
“We had the property assessed.”
“I can read.”
“Dad, listen to the rest.”
I folded my arms.
David continued.
“You’ve complained about the roof for years. And the back steps. And that bathroom downstairs.”
“I complained about those things to your mother.”
Ryan nodded.
“We know.”
That stopped me.
“How?”
He looked toward the living room.
