“You watered your property from our outdoor faucet?”
Margaret threw up her hands.
“You lived next door.”
“That is not an answer.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked away briefly.
She continued:
“It was occasional.”
“The recording says years.”
“That doesn’t mean every day.”
“You never told me.”
“Why would I?”
Adrian stared.
“Because I accused Claire of wasting money.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“That marriage had bigger problems than water.”
“That isn’t the point.”
“It is absolutely the point.”
She jabbed a finger toward me.
“Claire always wants to rewrite the divorce so everything was someone else’s fault.”
I said nothing.
Adrian did.
“Stop.”
Margaret froze.
He almost never spoke to her that way.
“Adrian.”
“No.”
“You let me think she couldn’t budget.”
“I never told you that.”
“You heard me say it.”
Silence.
“You heard us fight.”
Margaret looked away.
“That was your marriage.”
“You created part of the problem and watched us blame each other.”
“It was water.”
