The Truth That Destroyed Everything
I sat frozen in my seat, staring at the man I had buried just days earlier.
Karl — or whoever this was — kept his voice low, eyes scanning the bus nervously.
“I’m so sorry, Elena. I never wanted it to happen like this. But they were going to kill me… and possibly you too.”
He told me everything.
Karl’s real name wasn’t Karl. It was Marcus Hale, son of a powerful and extremely wealthy crime family involved in money laundering, extortion, and worse.
Five years ago, he had tried to escape that life. He changed his identity, moved to a new city, and met me. He truly fell in love and wanted a normal life.
But his family found him.
They gave him an ultimatum: come back to the family business or they would destroy everything he loved — starting with me.
The “heart attack” at the wedding was staged. A powerful drug that mimicked death perfectly. His cousin helped fake the medical reports and the funeral.
“They needed me to disappear publicly so I could work for them again without anyone looking for me,” he whispered. “But I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t leave you.”
He had been watching me from afar since the funeral, making sure I was safe.
Tears streamed down my face as the bus continued down the dark highway.
“So what now?” I asked, voice breaking. “We run? We hide?”
Karl squeezed my hand.
“There’s more. My family already knows I’m not fully cooperating. They’re watching you. That’s why I had to come find you.”
At the next major stop, he told me to get off with him.
We disappeared into the night.
