The world narrowed to the phone pressed against my ear. Mr. Sanders’ voice was urgent.

“They’re using a fake ID. The girl looks similar enough in poor lighting. You need to get to the notary office immediately. I’m already on my way with the police.”

I didn’t hesitate. I slipped out of the banquet hall through a side entrance while the crowd applauded Lily on stage. Aunt Susan was waiting in the car.

“To the notary on Lake Avenue. Fast.”

As we drove, I forwarded the voice recording to Mr. Sanders and prepared the printed documents. My hands were steady. The girl who once waited desperately for her father’s love was dead. In her place was someone who had learned that love was a luxury she could no longer afford.

We arrived at the notary office just as two police cars pulled up. Mr. Sanders stood on the steps, looking furious. Inside, through the glass doors, I saw my father, Carol, and a girl who vaguely resembled me sitting at the table with the notary.

I walked in first.

The moment my father saw me, his face drained of color. Carol’s smile froze.
