Chapter 1 — One Last Humiliation

Eight months after he walked out of our marriage, Damon called to invite me to his wedding and to tell me his new fiancée was pregnant — while my newborn daughter slept in a bassinet three feet from my bed.

“I’m finally marrying a woman who can give me a family,” he said, and I could hear the smile in it.

I did not argue.

I did not cry, or beg, or ask him how he could say such a thing to me.

I simply told him I would think about coming, and I hung up, and I forwarded his digital invitation to my attorney.

And then, because I am a careful person and always have been, I read the invitation all the way to the bottom, down into the fine print no one is supposed to read — the line naming the company that was hosting, and paying for, part of his lavish coastal wedding.

I read that company’s name, and I sat up in my hospital bed despite the ache of a body that had given birth the day before, because I knew that name.

I had seen it six times, on six wire transfers, leaving the private trust my late grandmother had built to make sure I would never depend on a man like Damon for anything.

My newborn daughter was not the only secret sleeping in that room.

She was just the one I loved.
