PART 2
Seven years later, that morning he was still chasing her.
He had built a life that seemed perfect from the outside. Good work, elegant apartment and economic stability. But every anniversary of that night, he would draw the note from the drawer where he kept it and read the same words again:
“Call it destiny. Don’t try to find me.”
He never did.
Until fate decided to find her.
One afternoon he received an unexpected call from a prestigious New York law firm.
“Miss Elena Morales?”
“Yes.
We need you to travel as soon as possible. You are listed in a private file related to Mr. Richard Beaumont.
The name didn’t tell him anything.
Who is it?
There was a silence.
One of the most important entrepreneurs in the country.
The heart turned it up.
Two days later she was sitting in a meeting room surrounded by lawyers.
Then he saw a photograph.
“Click here to read the full story”.
And the world seemed to stop.
It was him.
Older, with some gray hair, but he was the man of the hotel.
The man who was missing.
The man who had left him a million dollars.
“Where is it?” he asked with a trembling voice.
The lawyer looked down.
“He passed away three months ago.
He felt a strange mixture of relief, sadness and disappointment.
For seven years I had imagined that encounter.
And now it was impossible.
“Then… why am I here?”
The lawyer opened a folder.
Because he left very specific instructions for you.
There was a letter inside.
With trembling hands he broke the se
His breathing accelerated.
“When I met you at the party you were crying alone on a terrace. We talked for hours. You told me about your family, about your studies, about your dreams and about the fear of having to leave college for lack of money.”
Elena tried to remember.
Blurry fragments appeared in his mind.
A terrace.
A conversation.
A man listening to it.
“That night you reminded me of someone.”
The letter continued.
“You reminded me of my daughter.”
The words made her stop.
“She died at the age of twenty-two. I was your age. Your same smile. Your very desire to get ahead.”
The silence in the room was absolute.
“For years I accumulated wealth while losing the most important thing. When I heard you talk about your dreams, I understood that I had the opportunity to change someone’s fate.”
Elena felt tears fall uncontrollably.
“I didn’t leave that money for you as payment. Never. I gave it to you because I saw a brilliant young woman about to surrender because of the circumstances.”
His hands started to shake.
“The next morning I left because I knew you would never accept the money if I tried to explain it.”
The letter ended with one last sentence:
“I didn’t buy one night. I invested in a life.”
Elena closed her eyes.
For the first time in seven years, he understood the truth.
It was not a transaction.
It had been a desperate act of a broken man trying to save someone after he could not save his own daughter.
But it was not the end yet.
The lawyer slipped another folder on the table.
“There’s something else.
Inside were legal documents.
Lots of documents.
What is this?
“His last will.
Elena looked up.
I don’t understand.
The lawyer took a deep breath.
