“Grandpa? You’re scaring me.”

His hands began to shake around her. “Emily. Who is her father?”

“Caleb.”

Whatever Grandpa had been afraid of, that name confirmed it. He sank into a wicker chair, his voice thin as he confessed, “I promised your mother I would never tell you. Sarah made me swear years before the crash.”

“Swear what?”

“That you would grow up without that family in your life,” he said, looking away. “After what William did to her, I wanted nothing from that family anywhere near you.”
