I Surprised My Firefighter Husband at Work for His Birthday — Then His Captain Told Me Something I Never Expected
When I finally reached the hospital, I hurried through the entrance and asked for Tyler. A nurse directed me upstairs. I found him in a private room. He was awake. The moment I saw him, the fear I’d been holding back finally broke. Tyler had one arm supported, a bandage near his hairline, and several bruises across his face. He looked tired, but when he saw me, he smiled. “Hey.” I stood beside the bed. For several seconds, I couldn’t speak. Then I managed two words. “You idiot.” His smile became slightly wider. “Fair.” “You scared me.” “I know.” I leaned down and carefully kissed his forehead. Then I started crying. Tyler reached for my hand. “I’m okay.” “No, you’re not.” “I will be.” That answer was easier to accept. The doctors wanted to keep him overnight for observation. He had suffered a shoulder fracture, several cracked ribs, and a concussion. Thankfully, they expected him to recover with time and proper care. I sat beside him, holding his hand. After a while, Tyler looked at the balloons I’d carried into the room. “Did you really come to the station with those?” “And cake.” He closed his eyes. “Oh no.” “Your favorite cake.” “Amanda.” “You were supposed to be embarrassed.” He laughed softly, then immediately stopped because his ribs hurt. “Don’t make me laugh.” “You deserve it.” For the first time since arriving at the hospital, we both smiled. But something was still bothering me. “Tyler?” He looked at me. “Captain Reyes said there was something I didn’t know.” His expression changed. I waited. “What happened inside that building?” Tyler took a slow breath. “There was a child trapped upstairs.” I felt my stomach tighten. “The evacuation order had already been given. The building wasn’t safe.” He paused. “I heard her crying.” I stared at him. “Tyler…” “I went back.” I didn’t know what to say. Every emotion seemed to arrive at once: fear, anger, relief, and something I couldn’t quite name. “Did you get her?” Tyler nodded. “She was brought out safely.” I covered my mouth. “Was she hurt?” “No. Not seriously.” I closed my eyes. The thought of that little girl being safe was the first thing that made the entire day feel less frightening. Then Tyler squeezed my hand. “There’s something else.” I looked at him. “The department nominated me for a special award.” I blinked. “What?” He gave me an embarrassed smile. “Apparently, they approved the nomination.” I stared at him. “You knew?” “I found out before the call.” I shook my head. “You were going to tell me?” “After my birthday.” I laughed through my tears. “So I came to embarrass you, and instead you ended up in the hospital.” “Pretty much.” “And your crew knew about the award?” “Yes.” Suddenly, their strange expressions at the station made sense. They hadn’t known how to tell me about Tyler’s injury while also knowing that something positive was waiting for him. I leaned forward and hugged him carefully. “I was so scared.” “I know.” “I don’t want you doing anything that puts you in unnecessary danger.” “I know.” “But I’m proud of you.” He looked at me quietly. “That part means more than the award.”
