The words came out clean.
For months, I had imagined saying them in anger, in tears, in desperation. Instead, I said them like a door closing softly.
Andrew stared at me. Then he laughed once under his breath.
“With him?” he asked, nodding toward the empty office beyond the secret room. “You think Ethan Carter is your rescue? Ava, men like him collect fragile things. They do not keep them.”
The words hurt because they found an old fear. Maybe I had been foolish to imagine Ethan’s concern meant anything deeper. Maybe kindness from a powerful man was only another kind of possession waiting for a prettier name.
Then Ethan’s voice came from behind Andrew.
“You should leave my office, Doctor.”
Andrew turned.
Ethan stood in the outer room, no longer wearing his gala smile. Behind him were Luis and two security officers. His eyes met mine first, asking a question without words.
Are you safe enough to speak?
I nodded.
Ethan looked back at Andrew. “Your award segment has been postponed.”
Andrew’s posture changed. “On what grounds?”
“Foundation review.”
“That would be a mistake.”
“Maybe,” Ethan said. “I make them occasionally. Tonight does not feel like one.”
Andrew stepped closer, lowering his voice. “You are letting an emotional employee manipulate you.”
“No,” Ethan said. “I am listening to a woman who asked not to be cornered.”
Andrew’s face flushed. “You have no proof of anything.”
I heard Priya’s voice from the phone. “Dr. Vaughn, this conversation is being documented. You are directed to leave the premises.”
For the first time, real alarm crossed Andrew’s face.
Not guilt. Alarm.
His gaze moved to my phone, then to the desk, then to the ring.
“You will regret making this public,” he said.
“I haven’t made anything public,” I replied. “I’m just not hiding for you anymore.”
That silenced him.
Security escorted him out without drama. No shouting, no spectacle. Only the soft click of the office door closing behind him and the sudden vastness of the city beyond the windows.
The moment he was gone, my strength drained. Ethan crossed the room, then stopped several feet away.
“May I?” he asked, offering his hand.
I looked at it for a long moment before placing my fingers in his.
He did not pull me close. He simply held on.
That was enough.
Marisol wiped at one eye and pretended she had something in it. Priya remained on the call, gently returning us to practical matters. A doctor unaffiliated with Andrew would document my injuries. A car would take me to a secure hotel under another name. My access to work systems would remain active, but my schedule would be cleared.
My life, which had felt impossible an hour ago, became a list of manageable tasks.
Then Ethan’s assistant called from downstairs.
“Mr. Carter,” she said through the office speaker, “there’s something you need to see.”
Ethan frowned. “What is it?”
“The tribute video for Dr. Vaughn. It was never played, but the media team opened the file to move it. There’s another recording attached.”
Andrew’s voice sounded through the speaker a moment later, low and unmistakable.
“She knows too much about the Carter Foundation accounts. After the gala, make sure Ava Monroe disappears from Ethan Carter’s life permanently.”
My blood turned cold.
Ethan’s hand tightened around mine.
Then a second voice answered Andrew from the recording.
A voice I recognized as Ethan’s trusted board chair.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “By morning, Carter will believe Ava stole the money herself.”
PART 3 – END
Ethan’s office became silent in a way I had never heard silence before.
Not peaceful.
Not empty.
Listening.
The recording had stopped, but Andrew’s words still seemed to hang in the room like smoke. After the gala, make sure Ava Monroe disappears from Ethan Carter’s life permanently.
My hand was still in Ethan’s. I realized I was gripping him too tightly only when he gently shifted his fingers, not to pull away, but to let me hold on without hurting myself.
Across the room, Marisol stood frozen beside the desk, one hand pressed against her mouth. Luis remained near the door, shoulders squared, eyes fixed on Ethan as if waiting for an order. On the speaker, Ethan’s assistant, Claire, breathed shakily.
“Mr. Carter?” she said. “Should I delete the file from the media system?”
“No,” Ethan answered immediately. “Do not touch it. Do not copy it to a personal device. Do not send it to anyone. Lock the media booth and stay there with Daniel from IT until security arrives.”
