“Your niece activated a toy in her own home,” Detective Chen said.
“Whether every portion is admissible will be decided later.
Right now, it gives us probable cause to secure the property and prevent destruction of evidence.”
She turned to the patrol officer.
“Call the team at the house.
Nobody enters until the warrant is signed.”
Evelyn pressed a hand to her chest.
“That recording proves nothing.
I was cleaning.
Clara must have spilled something.”
Dr.Reyes, standing near the door, held up the sealed bag containing the doll.
“The stain is not cleaning solution,” he said.
“It is concentrated pesticide mixed with food residue.”
For the first time, Evelyn stopped speaking.
Detective Chen resumed the recording.
Clara’s voice was strained.
She told Lily not to touch the bowls.
Evelyn ordered them both to sit at the table.
Daniel accused Clara of turning Michael against his family.
Clara replied that Michael had frozen Evelyn out of their finances once before because she had taken money without asking.
That part was true.
Years earlier, Evelyn had used Michael’s card to pay Daniel’s overdue rent.
Michael had demanded repayment but had accepted her tearful apology.
Clara had warned him that apologies without consequences taught people how much they could steal next time.
He had defended his mother.
Now he heard Evelyn say, “By tomorrow, no one will believe a word you say.”
A bowl scraped across the table.
Clara asked what was in the soup.
Daniel said, “Eat it, or Lily eats alone.”
The next sounds were chaotic.
Lily began coughing.
Clara shouted for water.
A chair overturned.
A glass shattered.
Heavy footsteps moved across the kitchen as Clara tried to reach the door.
Then came Evelyn’s voice.
“More in the child’s bowl.
If only Clara gets sick, Michael may feel sorry for her.”
Michael’s hands curled into fists.
Daniel whispered, “That could kill her.”
“Then Clara will be blamed for poisoning her own daughter.”
No one in the consultation room moved.
The recording captured Lily crying for her father.
Clara told her to spit out the soup.
There was another struggle, followed by the wet slap of liquid hitting the floor.
Clara’s breathing grew ragged.
“Give me my phone,” she demanded.
Evelyn replied, “When Michael comes home, he’ll find an unstable woman who harmed her child and then herself.
Daniel has already spoken to the lawyer.”
Daniel’s voice shook through the speakers.
“You said we were only going to scare her.”
“Then stop standing there and help me clean.”
A mop bucket rolled across the tile.
For nearly two minutes, the only sounds were coughing, scraping, and Lily whimpering.
Then Clara’s voice became very close to the microphone hidden inside Miss Button.
“Hold the doll,” she whispered to Lily.
“Keep holding it.”
The toy struck the floor.
Fabric dragged through spilled soup.
Clara had deliberately pressed the doll into the liquid.
She had preserved a sample while Evelyn was trying to erase it.
The audio continued.
Daniel asked whether Clara and Lily were still breathing.
Evelyn said they were and ordered him to leave before Michael arrived.
“What about the bottle?” he asked.
“Behind the water heater.
I’ll take care of it later.”
A door closed.
For several minutes, Evelyn moved around the kitchen alone.
She washed dishes, filled the mop bucket, and rehearsed sentences under her breath.
“Clara refused to eat.
Clara became violent.
Clara must have mixed something into the soup.”
Then a third person entered the kitchen.
Michael recognized the voice immediately.
It belonged to Mrs.
Alvarez, the neighbor from across the street.
