How she hated peas.

“I know.”

“You were not supposed to.”
“I promised.”
Anna held her face.
“You did everything right.”
Lily looked toward Daniel.
“He said he’s my daddy.”
Anna’s eyes met his.
“Yes.”
“Is he staying?”
Anna could not answer for him.
Daniel did.
“Yes.”
Lily accepted that with a small nod.
Then she rested her head against her mother’s shoulder and fell asleep again.

But police still had questions about why Anna had been left without medical care.
Investigators located Caleb Rhodes two days later.
He admitted knowing Anna was pregnant.
He had driven past her house the week before the birth but refused to stop after seeing water across the road.
Phone records showed Anna called him eleven times during labor and in the days afterward.
He ignored every call.
He had also threatened her job months earlier.

He had seen Lily pushing the wheelbarrow approximately two miles from the farmhouse.
He told police he assumed the children inside were dolls.
