My Doctor Ex-Husband Delivered The Son He Never Knew Existed-myhoagroupp

The baby settled against me almost immediately.

I looked down at his tiny nose, curled fingers, and impossibly small body.

Nothing Marlene had ever said could reach me there.

Evan remained beside the bed.

He looked at the baby, then at me, and then back at the baby.

“Leah,” he whispered.

I told him not to begin.

His eyes filled with tears.

I had seen him cry at our wedding and during old military homecoming videos, but this was different.

This was not tenderness alone.

It was regret arriving in a form he could touch.

“Is he mine?” he asked.

The room became painfully still.

Dana stopped moving.

Rachel paused near the doorway.

My son slept peacefully against my chest, unaware that his future had just become the subject of a question his father should never have needed to ask.

I thought of every appointment Evan should have attended.

I thought of the ultrasound pictures I had held alone.

I thought of the shame I had carried because his mother blamed me and he permitted it.

Evan asked again, his voice breaking.

I adjusted the blanket around my son.

“This is not the place,” I said.

He closed his eyes.

Before he could answer, the delivery room door opened once more.

Marlene entered wearing pearl earrings, a simple church dress, and the confident expression of a woman accustomed to being welcomed wherever her son was.

She stopped when she saw the newborn on my chest.

Her eyes moved to Evan and then back to the baby’s face.

The smile she had carried into the room disappeared.

One hand tightened around her handbag strap.

“What is this?” she asked.

I pulled the blanket higher around my son.

Evan stood beside my bed in rumpled scrubs, still wearing the gloves he had used to deliver the child he had never known existed.

Marlene took another step forward.

Dana moved between her and the bed.

She reminded Marlene that I had just given birth and that this was not her moment.

Marlene ignored her and studied the baby’s chin, mouth, and eyes with growing disbelief.

She looked at Evan as though she expected him to deny the resemblance.

Instead, Evan asked how she had known where to find him.

Something flickered across her face.

She had not arrived because she knew about the baby.

She had come looking for her son and had walked directly into the consequence of everything she had said about me.

Evan removed his gloves and dropped them into the medical bin.

Then he told his mother she needed to leave.

Marlene stared at him before turning her attention back to me.

“How long have you known?” she asked.

I tightened my arms around my newborn son.

The way she asked made me realize she might not have been talking only about the pregnancy.

She might have been asking how long I had known that the story she built our divorce around had never been true.
