As they reached Gate 31, a man in uniform turned around, froze, and then started running. He dropped his coffee, knelt beside the wheelchair, and his voice failed him.

The two men embraced, tears silently streaming down their cheeks. Leo stepped back, smiled, and took a deep breath.
Then he heard it: the departure announcement for his own flight over the loudspeakers. The plane had already taken off.
He shrugged and was still smiling. « It was worth it, » he whispered.

The following morning, the flag-raising ceremony began as usual at Maple Ridge High School. The principal spoke over the loudspeaker; the students stood in neat rows, their hands placed over their hearts.
Leo’s seat in the classroom was empty.
Then a sound was heard: a muffled murmur, at first distant, then growing louder.

Leo wasn’t there yet.
His rebooked flight landed at Denver International Airport around 9 p.m. on Saturday. He texted his father, ate a hamburger in the terminal, and spent most of Sunday on his cousin’s couch. His mother picked him up Sunday evening, and he told her the story twice—once to her and once to his father over the phone—before falling asleep mid-sentence, still wearing his shoes.
