“Stop,” I called.
Both men turned.
Mikhail’s eyes settled on the hearing device.
“You activated it.”
I lifted my chin.
“Noah destroyed you.”
Mikhail smiled sadly.
“No. Noah destroyed everyone whose name was on that archive.”
Sirens sounded faintly above us.
Mikhail raised the pistol toward Lila.
Damian stepped between them.
“Shoot me.”
Mikhail’s hand trembled.
“You were born for me.”
“No,” Damian said. “I was born despite you.”
“You have my blood.”
“I have my mother’s choice.”
Mikhail fired.
Damian jerked backward.
I screamed.
The bullet had struck his shoulder, but the impact threw him against the railing.
The metal broke.
He fell into the rushing water below.
“Damian!”
Without thinking, I jumped.
The cold swallowed me.
I found him beneath the surface, sinking, blood clouding around his shirt. I grabbed his collar and kicked upward.
A hand seized mine.
Viktor pulled us toward the lower platform.
Above us, Gabriel tackled Mikhail.
Their weapons skidded away.
Lila stood near the railing, signing desperately.
Mommy. Damian. Come back.
We dragged Damian onto the platform.
He was not breathing.
I pressed my hands to his chest.
“No. No, you promised her.”
I began compressions.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
His face remained still.
Lila knelt beside him.
She placed her palm over his heart.
Then she began tapping a rhythm against his chest.
Three slow beats.
Two quick.
Three slow.
I recognized it.
It was the pattern she used when frightened, a rhythm Noah had taught her by tapping it against her wrist.
I matched my compressions to it.
“Come back, Damian.”
Water thundered around us.
Above, Gabriel shouted.
A gunshot rang out.
Mikhail fell from the bridge into the black current and vanished beneath the flood.
I kept pressing.
Then Damian coughed.
Water spilled from his mouth.
His chest lifted.
Lila’s face crumpled with relief.
Damian opened his eyes.
He saw her hand over his heart.
A faint smile touched his lips.
“She heard me again.”
# PART 6 — THE TRIAL OF GRAYHAVEN
Three months later, Grayhaven House no longer belonged to fear.
Federal agents occupied the west wing. Evidence boxes filled the ballroom. The iron gates remained open during the day.
Mikhail’s body was never found.
Some believed the flood carried him into the harbor.
Others believed he survived.
Damian believed nothing without proof.
He spent six weeks recovering from the gunshot and the poisoning. The damage to his heart was serious but reversible. Dr. Petrov survived his wound and agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
Leon did the same.
Their testimony exposed dozens of officials.
Judges resigned.
Police commanders were arrested.
A senator disappeared hours before federal agents reached his home.
Noah’s archive became the largest criminal corruption case Baltimore had ever seen.
Reporters called him a hero.
I still called him my husband.
Lila and I remained at Grayhaven—not as prisoners, and not as staff.
Damian gave us a private apartment in the south wing.
