P2: The Arrest and the Aftermath – News

Michael was arrested that evening for assault on an elderly person (Sarah is 52, but the law is clear). David was also taken in for questioning because witnesses and evidence suggested he had been aggressively pressuring Sarah to sign while Michael held her arm.

At the hospital, I sat beside Sarah’s bed holding her hand as the doctor put in six stitches above her eyebrow. She cried quietly, not from the pain, but from the betrayal.

“I kept telling them the house wasn’t for sale,” she whispered. “It was Mom’s. It was my last connection to her. Michael said I was being selfish… that family helps family.”

I kissed her forehead gently. “You are not selfish. They are entitled.”

That night, the full story came out. Michael and Olivia had been secretly planning to use the beach house proceeds to bail out David’s restaurant, which was deeply in debt. They had assumed Sarah would eventually cave under pressure, especially with the whole family there “supporting” the idea.

They were wrong.

The next morning, the story was already circulating in our small community. Friends and neighbors who had seen the police cars were asking questions. I didn’t hide anything. I shared the truth with close family members. The shame Michael brought on himself was his to carry.

Michael was released on bail the following day, but a restraining order was immediately issued protecting both me and Sarah. He could not come near our home or contact his mother.

The betrayal cut deepest when I learned Olivia had filmed parts of the confrontation on her phone, laughing as Sarah begged them to leave. That video was later turned over to the police as evidence.

For the first time in his life, my son was facing real consequences.
