Ernesto looked at him for a long while.
Then he nodded with a gratitude that words could not contain.
Outside, the night air was cool. The motorcycles roared one by one, ready to leave. Before putting on his helmet, Raúl approached Ernesto and patted him on the shoulder.
“Next year, let us know ahead of time.”
Ernesto smiled.
“Next year… I’m going to reserve a bigger table.”
Everyone laughed.
Lucía took her father’s arm. Mauricio walked on the other side. His grandchildren stayed nearby, this time not falling behind.
And as he watched the motorcycles ride away in formation, with the echo of laughter still alive in his chest, Don Ernesto understood something that changed his soul:
That night he would not remember it because of those who almost failed him again.
He would remember it because of those who, without owing him anything, taught his own family what it truly means to show up for someone.
And for the first time in a long while, when he returned home, he did not feel as if he were going back to an empty place.
He felt that he still had reasons to look forward to the next birthday.
